A new report from researchers at Mary Immaculate College (MIC) has examined the true scale of human trafficking on the island of Ireland. According to the research, the true number of people trafficked into Ireland is at least 38% higher than what has been officially recorded.
The official figures are generated by a National Referral Mechanism but do not include 'invisible' victims of trafficking. Victims who are hidden in plain sight include those who never come to the attention of authorities, those who are known but do not self-identify as victims of trafficking and those who will no co-operate with authorities. The report details multiple reasons for the lack of self-identification by victims.
